Wonder in Art, Wonder as Art
with Dr Patrick Curry
Tuesday April 4th 2023 – 6:30pm – 8:00pm: £10 (UK time) via Zoom
This talk concerns the experience of wonder in and as art. Such moments are precious, usually rare, and notoriously difficult to analyse or discuss. Nevertheless, if we give up any idea of explaining them (which requires disenchanting them) for better understanding them (which honours them), I believe it can be done. We will consider some of the characteristics and dynamics of enchanting art that emerge, including its wildness, and therefore unusability; its concrete magic, which is both subjective (‘psychological’) and objective (‘material’ or ‘physical); and its truth-value, which is existential and metaphoric. Finally, such wonder is not an essence of any kind; it is a relationship.
For those who cannot attend live, there will be a recording available after the session has taken place. Simply book a ticket via the button below, and the recording link will be sent with the joining instructions.
