ABOUT THE COURSE:

In this course we shall learn to recognise, appreciate better, and understand more deeply enchantment, especially the wonder at its heart. It is an experience which is universal yet unpredictable, powerful yet subtle, and unmistakable but difficult to define. Its intensity ranges from charm through delight to full-blown joy. In all three forms it can inform, guide, and inspire, but the last kind can be life-changing. Contrariwise, its complete absence is debilitating and invites despair. So we shall also consider what we can do to invite it into our lives. What follows is a brief description of the classes. Every class will include both examples and ideas, each supporting and illuminating the other.

Week 1: Wednesday 7th February 2024
7.00pm-9.00pm

What is Enchantment?

This class consists of an introduction and overview of enchantment, concentrating on its chief characteristics and typical dynamics. These include relationality, encounter, wildness, metaphor, fatedness, and ‘concrete magic’. I will contrast enchantment with disenchantment – basically will and power – and with two other modes which produce false enchantment. These are Dionysian unity, on the one hand, and Apollonian separation on the other. We will also touch on the challenges of enchantment, such as maintaining (without resolving) the ‘tensive truth’ of deep paradox, and letting go of it when it passes (as it always does, although not without traces and effects).

Week 2: Wednesday 14th February 2024
7.00pm-9.00pm

Love

We shall consider enchanted love, especially but not only romantic love, as a powerful paradigm of enchantment. Its blessings and dangers will both figure. In this connection we will also discuss Aphrodite as one of the mythic exemplars of all enchantment, but especially this kind.

Week 3: Wednesday 21st February 2024
7.00pm-9.00pm

Nature

Many experiences of enchantment involve other natural beings, not only animals and plants of all kinds but living places. The sense of ‘living’ here overlaps with, but is not limited to, its biological definition, and animism is introduced as a way to remain open to and honour the former, broader sense. We will also explore the possibility that all experiences of enchantment are natural, and therefore of nature.

Week 4: Wednesday 28th February 2024
7.00pm-9.00pm

Religion

Religion, especially religious ritual, is a major source of enchantment. At the same time, there are theological obligations at work determined to tell you what it means, discouraging unlicensed wonder, and setting up permanent and universal Truth as more important. The effect of such a programme is necessarily disenchanting, so there is a tension at work in religion. We will look at how to negotiate it.

Week 5: Wednesday 6th March 2024
7.00pm-9.00pm

Art

Art is another huge, complex and wonder-full venue for enchantment, and we will touch on some the arts, one or more for each of our senses, while respecting the uniqueness of painting, music, and literature in particular. Here the etymology of enchantment – to be in a song – comes into its own, with narrative as a particular hallmark. Yet here too, there are powerfully disenchanting forces at work, especially stemming from and encouraging vulgar materialism.

Week 6: Wednesday 13th March 2024
7.00pm-9.00pm

Enchantment as a Way of Life

We shall close by considering what it might mean to live a life which stays open to, honours, and resolves to work with enchantment, and which learns from it as an experience of truth about the Other. I will suggest that such a life, in embracing the value of enchantment, entails a commitment to defend its conditions and dynamics, the ones we opened these classes with: relationality, humility, wildness and so on. So enchantment as a way of life isn’t only personal and private; it has serious implications for our relationships with the world , especially the natural world whose enemies are also enemies of wonder.
