Through Goethe’s Eyes:

In Relationship with Art and Nature through

Goethe’s Ways of Seeing

With Mary Attwood, MA, and Dr Louise Livingstone

An online weekend immersive

Friday 4th – Sunday 6th October 2024

As the Wheel of the Year turns once more and the days shorten, join Mary Attwood MA and Dr Louise Livingstone for an online immersive weekend exploring Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe’s (1749-1832) deep and revelatory ways of engaging through both Art and Nature.

Although known primarily as a literary figure, Goethe developed a philosophy of science and colour; a way of seeing that combines careful empirical observation and deep intuition into what guides patterns of changes over time within the living world. In this sense, Goethe’s way of seeing offers us a relational approach to meaning-making – using both our subjective and objective ways of knowing to come to know the world as it unfolds in the ever-present, living moment – through us. Through his work, Goethe brings us into new experiences of relata (that which comes before relationship) gifting us the possibility to consider what that means for each of us in a deeper context as beings intricately embedded in the continuous unfolding of the living, breathing world. Through Goethe’s eyes, pathways of living knowledge open in relationship with life as it unfolds giving us the opportunity to engage all our faculties of knowing – including the intellect, imagination, feelings and intuition.

Who is this for?

This online weekend immersive is for anyone who feels the need for a break from the busy-ness and narrow focus of contemporary life, and the desire to reconnect with a deeper sense of self in relation with the living world. Participants do not need to have any prior knowledge of Goethe.

What you will gain

Over the course of the weekend, you will have the opportunity to sink deeply into Goethe’s approach to the world. This weekend will support you to expand into yourself and the living world, learning to ‘see’ connections and relations in their wider context by bringing observations and accounts of form, behaviour, movement and structure to life within your imagination – itself a valuable and valid way of making sense of your place in the world. Participants will leave the weekend with a deeper sense of connection to the living, breathing world.
