The Bard and the Stars: How Shakespeare uses Astrological Symbolism to Inspire his Plays

Priscilla Costello and Colin McPhillamy

Tuesday 16th July 2024

 6.30-8.00pm (UK time) via Zoom

This presentation, in both didactic and dramatic form, will show that Shakespeare’s creative works were inspired by a cosmological model of an interconnected meaningful universe with synchronicities between humanity, nature, and the cosmos.  Originating with Pythagoras and Plato, this model (the “Great Chain of Being”) was elaborated over 2,000 years with additions from multiple streams of Western thought: not only Platonism, but also Neo-Platonism, Kabbalism, Hermeticism, and Christianity. By Shakespeare’s time it is a fully developed cosmology positing connections between all the different levels of creation through sympathetic resonance.

The spheres of the stars and planets, named after the deities of Greek and Roman mythology, are integral parts of this model and function as carriers of psychological, philosophical, and spiritual meaning—revealing that Shakespeare is one of the Western world’s greatest spiritual teachers.

Not only will this presentation revisit a cosmology that restores meaning to our human experience (in this age of atheistic science), but it also presents the keys to hearing the Bard’s plays in new ways to facilitate a deeper understanding and appreciation of them.

Priscilla and Colin will both be deconstructing this model, and Colin will be using his skills as an actor to recite excerpts and speeches from the plays.  We will be specifically referring to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as an example to show that particular plays were inspired by specific astrological symbols.

For those who cannot attend live, there will be a recording available after the session has taken place. Simply book a ticket via the button below, and the recording link will be sent with the joining instructions.
