ABOUT THE COURSE:

The work of J.R.R. Tolkien is among the most widely-read and loved in the last century, and continues to be so today. Described (and sometimes dismissed) as ‘fantasy’ – a category he almost single-handedly created, without intending to – it is in many ways deeply realistic: an epic story about another world and time which are also our own, and are equally as wonderful and threatened. In this four-week course exploring his literary creation and its central themes, we shall concentrate on his most important book, The Lord of the Rings, with nods to its predecessor The Hobbit and its posthumously published prequel The Silmarillion.

Week 1: Wednesday 9th October 2024
6.30pm-8.30pm

Introduction to Tolkien and the Hobbits

In this session we will introduce Tolkien the storyteller and his work. We will then turn to one of Tolkien’s key themes: the hobbits, whose importance turns out to be bigger than their size, and the Shire.

Week 2: Wednesday 16th October 2024
6.30pm-8.30pm

Middle Earth and the Sea

This week we explore the greater world of Middle-Earth and Tolkien’s prescient environmentalism before touching on the most encompassing sphere and its significance: the Sea, symbolizing spirituality. We shall also discuss religion and fate in Tolkien’s world.

Week 3: Wednesday 23rd October 2024
6.30pm-8.30pm

Middle Earth: Sauron, Mordor and the Ring of Power

This week we considers the greatest power in Middle-Earth: Sauron, Mordor, and the Ring of Power, as well as the fanatical quest for deathlessness that ultimately drives it.

Week 4: Wednesday 30th October 2024
6.30pm-8.30pm

Faërie, Elves and Returning to Hobbits

This week we look deeply into Faërie – Tolkien’s term for enchantment – and his unique Elves, who are its exemplars, along with their abodes like Lothlórien – before returning in a roundabout way to hobbits.
