This year, 2021, is the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante, the author of the great Divine Comedy. It is a towering work in western spirituality, which can make it intimidating. That said, he lived in a time of turbulence, in which people felt they were losing their way, and he was clear he wrote for future generations, as well as his own. So what might he illuminate for us now? This talk will offer a way into the labyrinth, reflecting on the Divine Comedy itself and the great art it has inspired. It will consider themes from the links between descent and ascent, the nature of freedom, the intelligence of light, and the transformation Dante himself undergoes that so widens his perception. It will assume no prior knowledge of the Divine Comedy, though should also be valuable to those who know the work. It draws from Mark Vernon’s forthcoming book, Dante’s Divine Comedy: A Guide For The Spiritual Journey (Angelico Press). For more information see – www.markvernon.com.
