Patrick Curry PhD
Patrick Curry was born in Canada and lived there and in America, gaining a BA from UCSC (where he studied with Gregory Bateson) before moving to the British Isles in the 1970s. To his surprise, he has now lived in London for most of his life. He holds an MSc from the LSE and a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science from University College London, and he has been a Lecturer at the University of Kent and Bath Spa University. He remains a tutor at the University of Wales Trinity St David. He was External Advisor for a new MA in Engaged Ecology at the University of Plymouth in 2020, has supervised several PhDs through to completion and acted as External Examiner for four PhD theses. Patrick is also Editor-in Chief of an online journal, The Ecological Citizen and a Companion of Ruskin’s educational charity The Guild of St George, as well as an Advisor to the Center for Climate Literacy and an Expert Advisor to Population Matters. He has recently participated in an extended online conversation with Dr Iain McGilchrist and as well as for the Centre for Myth, Cosmology and the Sacred, he has given lectures for the Embodiment Conference, the Authors and Artists Festival, the Slough and Oxford literary festivals, Schumacher College, the Guild of Pastoral Psychology, the London Arts-Based Research Centre, the Temenos Academy, the Scientific and Medical Network, the Pari Center, the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics (the last with Rebecca Burrill) and the universities of Worcester, Canterbury Christ Church and Kentucky.

Patrick took his lay Buddhist vows in 2000 with the late Kobun Chino Otogawa, won a black belt in karate kickboxing in 2004 and still practises tai chi, and plays guitar in order to give his left brain hemisphere an occasional break. He is also the father of two inexplicably grown-up children. Running through Patrick’s various concerns, as reflected in his books, is a project of transvaluation of what has been marginalised by and within mainstream modernity, whose project (as defined by Val Plumwood) is the rational mastery of nature, including human nature. In contrast, he is keen to understand, honour and defend the wellsprings of life and its wonder in the bodymind, the female, and the Earth. He is currently at work on a book on these themes whose working title is Living Enchantment: Wonder in Life and Death.
