“A Solstice Mystery for the Solstice”: Celtic Myth, Sacrifice and Archetype with the Sacred Well Murders

with Susan Rowland, PhD

Tuesday 21st June 2022

6.30pm-8.00pm (UK time) – via Zoom

£10

About the session:

If we do not individuate our gods, we may become possessed by them. Europeans today have roots in indigenous societies who found their sacred in nature. The Celts lived by embodying myth and ritual in ways hard to imagine for the fragile western consciousness of today. For those of us at least 2000 years removed from indigenous sacred cosmologies, what is at stake when we try to connect with these origins? Like other countries, England remains Celtic in ways largely hidden in plain sight. Given Celtic myths of the sacred in the land, in water courses and ritual moments such as the Summer Solstice, what might the Celts have for us in this post-pandemic moment of climate emergency?

This talk will use Dr Rowland’s Jungian Arts-Based Research project on Celts in the 21st century, a mystery novel with real sacred mysteries, The Sacred Well Murders. Given that detective fiction enacts the holy grail myth for our time, Dr Rowland will show how archetypes and the sacred come alive in the reading process, and how art can be a form of divination for our time.
